FREEDOM OF SPEECH. FREEDOM OF WORSHIP. FREEDOM FROM WANT. FREEDOM FROM FEAR.

These 4 Freedoms were outlined as essential human rights by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1941 and immortalized on canvas by Norman Rockwell (first published in The Saturday Evening Post in 1943).

Old Mill Road Media, publisher of Berkshire Magazine, is holding its 4th Annual CREATE 4 FREEDOM™ Essay & Poetry Contest.

One's Moral Compass

“Each According to the Dictates of His Own Conscience” is written large on Norman Rockwell’s painting, Freedom of Worship, which was inspired by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1941 State of the Union address, in which he outlined four essential human rights:

Freedom of Speech. Freedom from Want. Freedom of Worship. Freedom from Fear.

One’s own conscience informs our moral judgments. And those judgments largely color our world view— they guide us in our ethical decisions and our actions. What do these nine words “Each According to the Dictates of His Own Conscience” mean to you, and how does your moral compass inform your actions?

The works will be judged on their artistry, creativity, thoughtfulness, and intelligence. Writings must be original and previously unpublished. The Essay submissions must be no more than 1,500 words in length. The Poetry submissions must be no more than 250 words. Acceptable poetry forms include rhyme, haiku, or free verse. First Prize winners will each have their entries published in the July 2024 edition of Berkshire Magazine and will each receive a $750 cash prize, courtesy 1761 Arts.

Deadline for submissions: Monday, May 8, 2024
